SIA Awards

Snowsports Industries America (SIA) commissioned us to redesign the standard wood plaques that they award to the year’s top Retailers and Sales Reps. What they needed was an award that captured the vibe of the exciting and innovative snow industry.

For the 2012 awards, we had a mountain CNC cut from beetle kill pine which is then set into a block of rough cut, flame polished acrylic. Adding an eco-story, Beetle Kill Pine is one of the most up-cycled wood species due to the recent infestations in North America, which have been caused by climate change. The beetles introduce blue stain fungus into the sapwood that prevents the tree from repelling and killing the attacking beetles with tree pitch flow. The fungus also blocks water and nutrient transport within the tree. Inheritantly the blue stain makes for the beauty of the finished wood. The thing just looks killer.

The 2011 awards we etched stainless steel mountains, backed by a snow-white plate which is set into a block of rough cut, flame polished acrylic. The award evokes chilly.
